More Linux

So I found out last night that I was running a slightly outdated version of Fedora. I was running Core 1 and it appears that Core 2 is released to the general public and is stable.

I did some research on how to upgrade and got results from "easy as cake" to "a nightmare - don't do it."

I thought "what the heck" and tried the in-place upgrade. I downloaded an image that I burned to CD (using the Linux free cd creator of course) so that I could do an FTP upgrade. I figured - what the heck - lets really go for broke.

So after a couple false starts (I had the path to the "stage 2" image wrong) I was able to complete a fully GUI upgrade from Fedora core 1 to Fedora core 2 in about 2.5 hours. I didn't even have to do much.

Also, it fixed an application I broke when I was experimenting (Evolution started generating errors). FYI - Mozilla for Fedora is not the same as Mozilla for windows.

I was trying to import my Outlook PST into Evolution and it wouldn't work, so I read somewhere that you could use Mozilla to do it. However, I didn't read close enough to see that you can't use Mozilla for Linux to do this.

So anyways I did this today - I have Mozilla on my work computer so I was able to easily import my Outlook.pst and Archive.pst and then export both my email history and conacts to the more familiar Mbox format which Evolution can then import.

Wierd - the 2 pst files were 22 megs, but the ENTIRE mail folder for Mozilla is only a few megs. Guess I will find out tonite if i got it all.

Anyways, now that I've performed the upgrade I'm going to keep playing - I still want to get WINE running so I can run windows apps and games, and I still have to play with MySQL and PHP.

Gotta love Gmail

I've had a Gmail account for a few months now, and recently (if you didn't already know) everyone got an April Fools day present - more capacity. twice as much actually. Its funny though - My email inbox has sat at 1% capacity since then - even though I have been getting emails it's still at 1%. What that means is that the inbox is growing. And it is - I started at 2053 megs and now its at 2098 megs. It seems to grow with each email I get. I'm not complaining - in fact I like it. goodbye Hotmail!!

Trailer Trash

For a long time I've been lead to believe that the term "trailer trash" was a derogatory term. But I've been thinking about this for a while and I realized that that is not the case. In fact I believe that I am trailer trash. Not only that I'm proud to admit it. You see, to me "trailer trash" represents a person (or group of people) who just don't give a shit what anyone else thinks of them. It has nothing to do with the fact that they may or may not live in a mobile home, it has more to do with an attitude, in my opinion. For example, in the city where I live, lots of people are more concerned with keeping up with their neighbours, or what their friends think of them than should be. I've lived my life these past few years just how I want to. I don't care what others think about me or how I live my life. And we've tried to instil that into our son - that he be more concerned with how he feels and not what others think. Because let...
